Retention marketing that drives repeat purchases: 3 principles

While we are eager to bring in new customers, it is easy to put bringing back customers who have already visited on the back burner. However, in terms of return on investment, driving repeat purchases from existing customers is far more efficient than acquiring new ones. Today, I will introduce three principles of retention marketing that even small business owners can apply immediately.

A low repurchase rate is not due to a problem with the product or service, but mostly because there was no “reason to think of it again.” The following three principles are things you can start today without a special budget.

Principle 1. 3 days after purchase, don't miss the golden time.

The first three days after purchase are when customer satisfaction is highest. If you send a short message containing a thank-you or usage tips during this period, it will be remembered as thoughtful care rather than just a simple notification. Text messages, KakaoTalk channels, or emails are all fine. The important thing is to approach them with a tone of "well-being" rather than a "sales" tone.

Principle 2. Design memorable experiences, not data.

It is difficult to retain customers' hearts in the long run with point accumulation or discount coupons alone. Small details that make them feel "recognized"—such as a handwritten message on their birthday or a thoughtful remark remembering their purchase history—lead to repeat purchases. Think of it as designing a relationship, not a system.

Principle 3. Please request reviews via conversation, not as a favor.

“Instead of saying, ”I would appreciate it if you left a review,“ try asking first, ”How was your experience using the product?” Conversations initiated by questions elicit much more sincere responses, and in the process, customers are reminded of the brand once again. A single line of heartfelt review becomes the most powerful marketing asset that drives the next purchase.

Retention marketing starts with consistent interest rather than grandiose systems. Try practicing just one of the three principles introduced today this week. As small changes accumulate, you will find that your loyal customers have grown before you know it.
